Metallurgy and Sustainable Development |

The objective of the Study Tour was to make the participants acquainted
with the Czech achievements in the field of pollution prevention, waste
minimisation, effective utilisation/recycling in Czech iron and steel
industries, scrap handling (even contaminated scrap treatment), zero
waste concepts including raw materials and energy consumption reduction
as well as the experience acquired by relevant players with BAT (Best
available technologies), ISO 9000 for quality management and ISO 14000
introduction, leading ultimately to EMS introduction.
The Study Tour programme included lectures with the following topics:
- Czech Iron and Steel industries from the viewpoint of sustainable
development
- Global Iron and Steel scenario and sustainable development
- Preventive approach to the environment management in steelworks
- Introduction of EMAS and ISO 14000 in steelworks
- Quality and product certification in steelworks environment, new
ISO 9000 family of standards
- Scrap treatment and recycling including scrap decontamination
- Requirements and results of adjustments to European and IISI
integrated environmental standards
- TEEMS and case studies of environmental risk and impact assessment
in Czech metallurgy and engineering
- Iron and steel industry and the best available techniques
- Advanced magnetic separation technologies of metal wastes
Participants obtained document "Steel Industry in the Czech
Republic on the Threshold of the new Millennium" prepared by the
Steel Federation (Hutnictví železa) as well as technical papers on the
above listed technical topics.
As a part of Study Tour programme industrial visits to the following
enterprises/companies were prepared and implemented:
- KOVOŠROT Kladno - scrap recycling facility
- THERMOSONDY Kladno - thermoprobes manufacturer for foundries and
steelworks
- ŠKODA Klatovy - producer of industrial furnaces and heat
processing equipment for metallurgy, mechanical engineering,, glass
and ceramic and civil engineering
- ŠKODA STEEL Pilsen (metallurgical works and forging shop) -
producer of steel, steel castings, nodular and grey iron castings,
steel ingots, pattern equipment, open die forging, die forging
- EPA Běchovice - magnetic separators manufacturer

The Study Tour was attended by 12
participants from the following countries: Egypt (3), Iran (1),
Libya (1), Morocco (1), Saudi Arabia (2), Syria (1), Tunisia
(1), Tanzania (1) and Ukraine(1). |
